Located on the hilly terrains of the Western Ghats, the Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary is a haven for different species of wild life, birds and vegetation. Its wet decidious forest, clothed in dense mist are a picture perfect location for a Wild life reserve. The Moyar River, which flows through the Park separates Mudumalai from Bandipur. Although small in size ( 320 sq km ), the park supports diverse habitats such as the wild elephant, gaur, deer and primates like the bonnet macaque and langurs. The carnivores include the tiger, leopard and the dhole - the Asiatic wild dog, that hunts in packs.
The colourful bird variety include hornbills, the great black woodpecker with its dramatic red crest, mynas, barbets and parakeets. Sounds of the night birds can be heard in the distance. These are the tiny eared owl, the scops owl and the little scops owl. Birds of prey include the crested hawk eagle and the crested serpent eagle that can be seen circling above. Lying adjacent to Mudumalai is The Annamalai Sanctuary, known for two species that are exclusive to it - the Nilgiri langur and the lion tailed macaque.
